Warp and Weft Defined

Above, plain weave with warp yarns indicated in black and weft or filling yarns indicated in blue.  The warp yarns are threaded through heddles on the loom, and rolled on to a beam.  Weft yarns are inserted through the shed, formed when some warp yarns are raised and others are not.
